Module 1: Mapping the Body
Key Elements: Body Connectivity - Breath Support - Movement Effort - Neutral Spine - Embodiment
This module covers the basic principles of human movement: Movement as release, movement as expression and developmental movement: a progression of movements on the floor to standing and then through space (expanding our movement vocabulary). Laban’s elements of BODY, EFFORT, SPACE AND SHAPE are fundamental in this component as is hands on bodywork. Experiential anatomy is used as bases for this study and is explored through the deep somatic methods of skin/muscle/bone, fluid body and cellular support. This module provides a rich overview for the scope of movement possibilities and provides an inroad for developing movement efficiency and expressiveness.

Module 2: Landscape/Body scapes; Symbols, Dance & Silences
“We respond to nature as being beautiful and right because we ourselves are part of its making, and we empathize with its order.” In this module we return to the natural environment and explore our relationship to landscape in a new way. “What landscapes have been apart of our history? How are they important to us? Our sense of belonging? Through the study and practice of dance in the natural environment, we draw inspiration from nature and create our own personal and collective rituals.

Module 3: Dance as a Therapeutic Tool
“Dances created in response to real life issues have great transformative power.” ~ Anna Halprin
In this module, you develop an understanding of the interrelationship between the physical, emotional and cognitive dimensions of human behavior. It recognizes that body movement is the basis for human interaction and communication and is vital to personal and collective health. You will examine autobiographical content through somatic movement, journaling, intuitive drawings and expressive movement. Authentic Movement the practice of the mover and the witness is used extensively in this module, covering the principles of dance as a therapeutic tool and how it can transform and change lives.

Module 4: Shaping Movement into an Art Form
“Dance is a language where each gesture, each movement, each attitude has meaning.” ~ Gurdjieff
This module will introduce you to modes of improvisation as a resource for creating spontaneous, expressive and authentic performances. Through the creative process, we explore the dynamic of the collective body and a heightening of commitment to the individual and collective process “Art coming out of our lives, our life made artful.”
