What is
Expressive Dance and Movement Therapy? |
|
Expressive dance and movement therapy is a physical, personal and
creative process, which acknowledges the connection between the
body and the self.
It is based on the principle that the physical body provides a
rich source of information about who we are, how we feel, and the
relationship we have with our inner and outer worlds.
In many cultures throughout history, dance has been used to express
the basic needs, struggles and strengths of the individual and community.
Dance and movement are tangible and creative means by which individuals
can express their inner world through the language of your body
in a playful, authentic and meaningful way.
This results in greater ease and fluidity in the moving body as
well as positive changes in how we think, feel and perceive the
world.
EDMT helps to integrate the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual
aspects of individuals and groups through body awareness and movement
expression.

Simpatico - Body-Voice &
Movement Expression
“For me, dancing and singing is rediscovering
the life process, experiencing the intensity of existence with
a finer notion of time. While sounding, while dancing,
I gradually become aware of an inner world,
of another me and my life is changed by this new universe which
I have discovered.”
The workshop is open to all who have a desire to uncover deeper
connections between body, voice and self, whether for performance,
professionally or personal being,
No previous dance or voice experience necessary.

Groups and Communities
“The Moving Stories of

of group work resulting in an exhibition. This project is an excellent
example of EDMT bringing out the inner voice of individuals and
communities or existing groups.
Living Dance is available to groups who want to document their
stories and experiences through the creative process, either in
our studio or we can come to you.

Dancers, artists, performers, therapists, healers, teachers, group
facilitators and body workers can also gain new perspectives and

| What can I expect to do in
a class? |
Each session begins with a series of warm-ups. These
help deepen and loosen your breathing while increasing, flexibility
and softness in the body - releasing physical, emotional and mental
stress.
The warm up helps to focus your awareness on the moving body.,
creating a calming and soothing effect on your whole system.
You will then be guided to move in different ways. Gliding, walking,
rolling, springing, closing, lengthening and opening all become
part of the language that gives your body its voice.
You will explore your senses – following impulses, exploring
your imagination, creativity, stories and emotions – in a
safe and contained environment.
The focus is on feeling the qualities, textures and shapes of your
movements, providing an opportunity for understanding and insight.
" When I came to
the workshop, I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was surprising
and far exceeded any expectations I may have originally held.
It not only provided me with great joy each week, it provided
me with amazing insights into myself."
~ Jennie Harris, Nurse

It is at this point that the potential for healing and change within
the body/ mind is at its greatest. Spontaneous drawing or writing
is then used to integrate the experience. Taking the time to write
down what comes into your awareness whist moving provides a space
for reflection. You can then make any possible connections to your
life.
The emphasis is on learning about your body/self in a new way and
expressing this with new depth and vitality.
